The AAHGS Tampa, Florida Chapter


The mission of the AAHGS Tampa Florida Chapter is to preserve family history and cultural diversity with a focus on African American families. The primary goal is to save and promote scholarly research, provide resources for historical and genealogical studies, and create a network of person with similar interests.

The purposes of this organization are: 

To encourage scholarly studies in local and family history;

To encourage individuals who desire to share genealogical and historical expertise to enhance the heritage of African Americans;

To host workshops and seminars, that present informative speakers on history, genealogy, and cultural aspects of our heritage;

and to support and carry out the objectives and policies of the National Society.

Chapter Events


AAHGS Tampa meets on the second Saturday of the month at 1:00 pm via Zoom. A link is added to our AAHGS - Tampa Florida Facebook group every month. AAHGS Tampa is on break in July and August.

Our meetings are virtual except for December when we have a hybrid meeting.


Chapter History


Tampa Afro-American Genealogy Group was initially organized by Betty Lopez as an independent group in 2000 and later was chartered as AAHGS Tampa Florida Chapter in 2004.

Meetings were held at the John F. Germany Public Library Genealogy Department, later moving to the Robert W. Saunders Sr. Library in Tampa, Florida. Currently we primarily meet virtually.
