The AAHGS Nashville Chapter


Charted November 12, 2005, the Nashville Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc (AAHGS). is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to support the national organization of AAHGS by providing resources for historical and genealogical studies, creating a supportive network among researchers, and showcasing and celebrating the findings.

The purposes of this organization are: 

To encourage scholarly studies in local and family history;

To encourage individuals who desire to share genealogical and historical expertise to enhance the heritage of African Americans;

To host workshops and seminars, that present informative speakers on history, genealogy, and cultural aspects of our heritage;

and to support and carry out the objectives and policies of the National Society.

Chapter Events

Regular meetings & workshops occur on the 1st Saturday of the month in March, April, May, September, October, November, and December. Our meetings are hybrid unless otherwise noted.

Chapter History

Since our Chapter’s founding in 2005, AAHGS Nashville has collaborated with a multitude of community partners, including the Boy Scouts of America, local & regional, churches and organizations, Nashville Public Television, and the Fort Negley Descendant’s Project.

We are grateful to the inspiring work and efforts of our founding members (Michelangelo McCallister, Sr., Jewel Ann Dillihunt McCallister, H. Henryne D. White, Gloria Haugabook McKissack, Dr. Carol Creswell-Betsch, Jessie Carney Smith, Pamela Eleanor Foster, Dolores Porter Foster, Margarette Robinson Foster Chesser, Lena Brown Prince) and charter members (Leslee Dodd Karl, Julia Otey Lee, Willie Edwards, Hortense Johnson, Oddie Bryant Jones).
