Chapter History

Our chapter is organized around and named for Richard B. Dickenson, Staten Island Borough Historian from 1991 until his death in 2006. A true scholar and a gentleman, Mr. Dickenson was a community activist, historian, humanitarian and a friend and colleague to many.  He was a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (NJAAHGS). He did extensive research on Staten Island’s history including the Island’s black community authoring a revised edition of Holden’s Staten Island as an edited updated edition featuring the original 1964 text, a reprint of Evelyn Morris King’s “Black Man on Staten Island,” and "rare photos of historic buildings and historic maps."
