Juneteenth Event: African American Genealogy Research: Resources and Strategies

About this event

The Delaware City Library will present a dual presentation from local experts, Leah Greer, Archivist, Delaware Public Archives and Rosalyn Green, President, Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Delaware Chapter.

The Delaware Public Archives presentation, Black Family History at the Delaware Public Archives, is presented by Archivist Leah Greer. Black family history research can pose unique challenges as you follow your family into the 19th century, prior to the passage of the 13th Amendment, and earlier. This presentation highlights resources available at the Delaware Public Archives for researching Black family history within Delaware, from the present day and throughout the history of the state. Learn techniques to unearth crucial details about formerly enslaved ancestors and Delaware’s rich history of free Black communities.

The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society presentation will delve into your personal genealogical research strategy by exploring the process of performing African-American genealogy, which begins with interviewing the living and then performing a record search to move backwards in time, with specific techniques on how to break through the African American brickwall for ancestors who were enslaved and tips for finding records of enslaved and free African-American ancestors.

Join us for these fascinating and informative presentations and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions of these experts.

Registration is requested here.
