AAHGS Nashville: Researching Enslaved Ancestors (hybrid)

About this event

This meeting is free and open to the public. We will meet in-person at Fort Negley.
To join via Zoom, register here.

The next meeting meeting of AAHGS Nashville will be held Saturday, Nov. 9th. The topic will be "Researching Enslaved Ancestors," featuring librarian and archivist Lauren Hamric, of the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

Have you had much luck tracing your family surnames back to enslaved ancestors? Hopefully you have and we'd like to hear your stories. However, many of us get stuck tracing our African American families prior to the 1870 census. We're going to help you get unstuck at the next meeting of AAHGS Nashville!

Research resources will be provided about the complexity of slave surnames. Not all of newly emancipated Blacks chose the slaveholders' surname as their own. They used various approaches when declaring their legal surnames for the first time.
