Maggie L. Walker: “Labor of Love” Special House Tours

About this event

The 161st birthday celebration of Maggie L. Walker starts with specialized house tours, kids’ activities, and a pop-up display at Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. Tours highlight Maggie Walker’s passion for supporting her community as a labor of love through her family, employees and faith. Kids’ activities and crafts honor the 130th anniversary of the Independent Order of St. Luke’s Juvenile Department, founded by Mrs. Walker in 1895. The site will also feature an interactive pop-up activity that explores the differences between jobs common to Black women in the early 20th century and those at Walker's office building, St. Luke Hall.

House tours are offered at their regularly scheduled times Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Each tour is capped at 10 people and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Kids’ activities and the pop-up are open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
